State Government Secures Cabin Fever Festival for Three More Years

The Cook Government has committed to funding the popular Cabin Fever Festival for an additional three years, providing a significant boost to the South West’s winter tourism economy and offering crucial long-term certainty for the region’s agritourism operators. The renewed support, delivered through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, solidifies the 10-day event as a cornerstone of the off-season calendar, driving visitation and spending at a time that is traditionally quieter for hospitality and accommodation providers.

A Proven Economic Driver for the Winter Season

Now in its ninth year, Cabin Fever has established a strong reputation for attracting thousands of visitors to the South West, with events held at venues across the Margaret River and Busselton areas. The festival is strategically designed to stimulate the local economy during the slower winter months, directly benefiting wineries, breweries, restaurants, and accommodation providers. In a media statement, Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson highlighted the event’s impact, stating, “This festival has grown in popularity since its inception and helps local businesses thrive in the quieter winter months, allowing visitors to enjoy what the region has to offer.” The three-year funding commitment allows operators to plan with confidence, embedding the festival into their annual business and marketing strategies.

Leveraging the Opportunity: What This Means for Operators

The long-term security of Cabin Fever presents a strategic opportunity for all WAAA members in the region, not just those who host official events. For wineries and farm-to-table venues, it offers a platform to showcase winter menus and premium produce. For farm stay and other accommodation providers, the festival is a reliable demand driver. Operators are encouraged to consider creating special offers, collaborating with participating venues on cross-promotions, and updating their marketing to specifically target the ‘winter escape’ market that Cabin Fever attracts.

A Pattern of Support for South West Food and Wine Tourism

This commitment is part of a broader government strategy to position the South West as a premier, year-round culinary destination. The announcement noted that this support is the latest in a series of event-focused investments, including the return of ‘Pair’d Margaret River Region’ and the hosting of the prestigious ‘The World’s 50 Best Vineyards Awards.’ This pattern of investment reinforces the region’s standing and provides a halo effect that benefits all businesses connected to the food, wine, and tourism sectors. As stated by Acting Tourism Minister Don Punch, “The event also provides a much-needed boost to the local economy… as travellers stay at the region’s hotels, explore its wineries, breweries and restaurants, and book experiences with local tourism operators.”

The 2025 festival took place from 18 to 27 July. WAAA members are encouraged to review the program at cabinfeverfest.com.au to identify opportunities for collaboration at next years event and to align their own marketing efforts.
